325-mesh (approximately 45 micrometers) silicon metal powder is finer than 200-mesh. This fineness offers two main advantages:
Fast reaction: When used as a raw material for organosilicon, it reacts more fully with chloromethane in a fluidized bed, resulting in higher production efficiency.
Good binding: When used in refractory materials, the fine powder fills the gaps in the aggregate, resulting in a denser and stronger product.
Our 98% grade has a consistently high silicon content (above 98%) and well-controlled iron, aluminum, and calcium impurities, making it a commonly used raw material for organosilicon monomers, refractory binders, and ceramic products.
For organosilicon production: Using 325-mesh powder results in a fast reaction rate and high conversion rate in a fluidized bed. Too coarse a powder leads to incomplete reaction; too fine a powder is easily carried away by the airflow, resulting in waste.
For refractory materials: Using 325-mesh powder as a binder fills the gaps between large particles (e.g., 3-5mm), resulting in denser bricks with fewer pores and higher strength.
For powder metallurgy: Some customers use 325-mesh silicon powder as an additive, requiring fine powder that can be evenly distributed in the matrix.

chemical composition
The 325-mesh silicon metal powder we supply is mainly divided into the following purity grades. The 98% grade is the most commonly used 325-mesh powder and offers excellent value for money.
| Grade | Si (%) ≥ | Fe (%) ≤ | Al (%) ≤ | Ca (%) ≤ | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 97 | 97.0 | 1.5 | 0.5 | 0.3 | Refractory materials, steelmaking deoxidation |
| 98 | 98.0 | 0.6 | 0.5 | 0.3 | Organosilicon raw materials, refractory binders |
| 553 | 98.5 | 0.5 | 0.5 | 0.3 | Aluminum alloys, organosilicon |
| 441 | 99.0 | 0.4 | 0.4 | 0.1 | High-end organosilicon, special alloys |
(We also have other higher purity grades, such as 3303 and 2202, but if you are buying the 98% grade, the one above is the most suitable.)
Uses of 98 Silicon Metal Powder 325 Mesh
1. Organosilicon Monomer Synthesis (Largest Application)
This is the primary downstream application of 325-mesh silicon metal powder. silicon metal powder and chloromethane are reacted in a fluidized bed to produce organosilicon monomers. 325-mesh size is widely recognized as the optimal size in the industry, offering good reactivity without being too fine to be blown away.
Key Requirements: Besides size, low levels of impurities such as aluminum, calcium, and iron are required; otherwise, they will poison the catalyst and affect reaction efficiency. Our 98% grade has excellent impurity control and is used by many organosilicon plants.
2. Refractory Material Binder
Adding a small amount of silicon metal powder during the production of high-alumina bricks, magnesia-carbon bricks, or monolithic refractories (such as castables) can act as a binder and filler. The 325-mesh fine powder can fill the gaps between aggregates, resulting in products with low porosity and high strength after firing.
How to Use: Generally added at 3%-8% of the formulation, premixed with the powder.
Particle size requirement: ≥90% pass rate through a 325-mesh sieve to ensure uniform dispersion. Our powder meets this requirement.
3. Powder Metallurgy Additives
Some customers add a small amount of silicon powder to adjust the composition for metal injection molding (MIM) or 3D printing. This requires fine powder, high purity, and no impurities. 325 mesh (approximately 45 microns) is slightly coarse for MIM, but sufficient for some coarse powder processes.
4. Steelmaking Deoxidizer (Niche Application)
Some small steel mills use silicon powder instead of ferrosilicon blocks for deoxidation. The advantage of using powder is faster reaction and less burn-off. However, it should be noted that powder that is too fine is prone to smoking; it is best to formulate it into cored wire or add it using a jetting device.

FAQ
Q: What's the difference between 325 mesh and 200 mesh? Which should I buy?
A: 200 mesh (approximately 75 micrometers) is coarser than 325 mesh. For organosilicon production, 325 mesh is currently the mainstream choice due to its better reactivity. For refractory materials, if the requirements aren't high, 200 mesh silicon metal powder is also usable and cheaper. You can choose based on your process requirements and budget.
Q: What's the difference between 98% silicon powder and 553 silicon powder?
A: 98% silicon powder has a silicon content ≥98%, iron ≤0.6%, and aluminum ≤0.5%. 553 silicon powder has a silicon content ≥98.5%, iron ≤0.5%, and aluminum ≤0.5%. 553 has higher purity and is more expensive. If you're making ordinary refractory materials or organosilicon, 98% is sufficient. If you have high product quality requirements, you can consider 553.
Q: What is the sieve pass rate of your powder at 325 mesh?
A: We guarantee a 325-mesh sieve pass rate of ≥90%, meaning that over 90% of the particles will pass through a 325-mesh sieve. A particle size test report is included with the shipment, and you can also retest it yourself.
