Product Introduction

Silicon carbide (SiC) is a chemically stable, hard, wear-resistant, high-temperature-resistant inorganic compound with excellent mechanical and thermal properties. It is often used to make materials that are wear-resistant, high-temperature-resistant, and have good thermal conductivity. Due to its high hardness, silicon carbide is often used as an abrasive and cutting material. Size 220 mesh means the number of mesh holes per inch, that is, the number of mesh holes per inch is 220. Silicon carbide powder of this size is of medium fineness, with a particle diameter of approximately 60-70 microns.

Products Main uses

Abrasives:

Commonly used in the manufacture of grinding tools such as grinding wheels, sandpaper, and sanding belts. They can be used for rough and semi-fine grinding of metals (such as cast iron, hard alloy), wood, and plastics to remove surface burrs, rust, etc. It can also be made into abrasive pastes and liquids for grinding precision parts such as optical lenses and semiconductor chips.

Sandblasting:

In the sandblasting process, dirt, rust, and old paint on the surface of metal parts can be cleaned, and the surface can be roughened to enhance the adhesion of subsequent coatings.

Refractory materials:

It is the raw material for making silicon carbide refractory bricks and castables. With its high melting point and corrosion resistance, it is used in high-temperature furnaces such as steelmaking and ironmaking to improve the strength, wear resistance, and thermal shock resistance of refractory materials.

Semiconductor processing:

In semiconductor manufacturing, it participates in silicon wafer cutting and grinding, cutting silicon rods into thin slices and grinding the surface of silicon wafers to remove the damaged layer. It can also be added to electronic packaging materials as a filler to improve thermal conductivity and mechanical strength.

Ceramic and glass processing:

It can grind and polish the surface of ceramic and glass products to make them smoother and more beautiful, and increase the added value of the products.

Wear-resistant coating:

As a wear-resistant coating component, it is applied to the surface of metals, mechanical parts, mining equipment, pipelines, etc. to enhance wear resistance and extend service life.

Key Properties & Advantages

220 grit silicon carbide powder offers a unique set of properties that make it superior to many other abrasives in its class:

Optimal Grit Size for Intermediate Processing:

As a medium grit, 220 is perfectly suited for removing scratches left by coarser grits (such as 120 or 180) while preparing surfaces for finer finishing with higher grits (like 320 or 400). This makes it a critical step in multi-stage polishing workflows, ensuring a smooth transition between coarse grinding and fine polishing.

Exceptional Hardness:

With a Mohs hardness of 9.5-second only to diamond-silicon carbide powder delivers aggressive material removal even on hard surfaces like stainless steel, ceramics, and glass. This hardness ensures long-lasting performance, reducing the need for frequent abrasive replacement and lowering overall costs.

Uniform Particle Distribution:

High-quality 220 grit silicon carbide powder features a tight particle size distribution, with most particles falling within the 53-75μm range. This uniformity prevents uneven grinding or "scoring" of surfaces, ensuring consistent results across large workpieces or batch processing.

Chemical Inertness:

Silicon carbide is highly resistant to acids, alkalis, and high temperatures, making 220 grit powder suitable for use in harsh environments. It won't react with most materials being processed, preserving the integrity of the workpiece and avoiding contamination.

Fast Cutting Action:

Despite being a medium grit, 220 silicon carbide powder offers efficient material removal, reducing processing time compared to finer grits. This balance of speed and smoothness makes it a cost-effective choice for high-volume production environments.

To ensure the quality of 220-mesh silicon carbide powder during storage and transportation, it is typically sealed. Common packaging materials include plastic woven bags lined with plastic film bags. This method is moisture-proof and waterproof, while also preventing oxidation and other reactions that may occur when the powder comes into contact with air. For customers purchasing in large quantities, ton bags are also available for easier loading, unloading, and transportation, improving logistics efficiency. The packaging is clearly labeled with information such as the product name, specifications, particle size, weight, manufacturer, and production date for easy identification and handling.
