Introduction of ferrosilicon in spring steel

Spring steel, as a "core material for elastic function," has extremely high requirements for strength, toughness, elastic limit, and fatigue life. Ferrosilicon (mainstream FeSi72/75) is a key alloying and deoxidizing agent in its production-it enhances the elastic limit through solid solution strengthening, refines grains to ensure toughness, and precisely deoxidizes and purifies the molten steel. The amount and purity control of ferrosilicon directly determine the service reliability of the spring steel.

Ferrosilicon selection requirements:

Priority grades: FeSi75 (Si 72%-78%), FeSi72 (Si 72%-75%). High silicon content can reduce the amount added and decrease impurity introduction.

Impurity control: Al≤1.0% (avoiding hard and brittle Al₂O₃ inclusions), S≤0.05%, P≤0.04% (preventing embrittlement). High-end spring steels (such as 60Si2CrA) require low-aluminum ferrosilicon (Al≤0.8%).

Ferro silicon

The following is the main role and introduction of ferrosilicon in spring steel

1,Enhance elasticity and resilience:

The silicon element in ferrosilicon can form silicides with iron and carbon in steel. These silicides can increase the elastic modulus of steel, thereby increasing the elasticity and resilience of spring steel. This is very important for the spring to quickly recover to its original shape after being stressed and maintain a stable shape and performance.

2,Improve fatigue resistance:

The silicon element in ferrosilicon can form fine silicide precipitates in steel, which can effectively hinder the movement of dislocations, thereby improving the fatigue resistance of spring steel. The spring can maintain stable performance under long-term repeated loading conditions and extend its service life.

3,Improve strength and hardness:

The appropriate amount of ferrosilicon addition can increase the strength and hardness of spring steel, enabling it to withstand greater stress and load while maintaining a stable shape and function. This is especially important for spring applications that require high strength and durability.

4,Improve corrosion resistance:

The silicon element in ferrosilicon helps to form an oxide film on the surface of steel, improves the corrosion resistance of steel, and extends the service life of springs. This is especially important for springs that are exposed to humid or corrosive environments for a long time.

5,Adjust the grain structure of steel:

Ferrosilicon alloy can also adjust the grain structure of steel to make it more uniform and fine, improve the uniformity and stability of the material, and facilitate the manufacture and use of springs.

In short, FeSi alloy, as an alloying additive in spring steel, improves the elasticity, fatigue resistance and corrosion resistance of steel by increasing the silicon content, enabling springs to perform well in various industrial and mechanical applications while extending their service life and stability.
