Ferro Silicon Lump & Powder

Ferro Silicon Lump & Powder

Ferrosilicon (FRS) is an alloy composed of iron and silicon, primarily used as a deoxidizer and alloying additive in steelmaking. It is also used as a reducing agent in foundries, mineral processing, welding rods, the light metal industry, and certain metallurgical processes. The primary raw material for ferro silicon production is silicon ore (quartz, silica). The SiO2 content of the ore is generally required to be above 96%, with a requirement of above 98% for high-silicon ferrosilicon production. The P2O5 content in the ore generally does not exceed 0.02%, and the Al2O3 content does not exceed 1.5%. Common FeSi grades include those with silicon content of 45%, 75%, and 90%.

(I) Ferro silicon alloy lumps

Natural Blocks: Common natural lumps are approximately 100mm thick. However, ferro silicon is sensitive to moisture and easily pulverizes upon contact with water, resulting in a decrease in silicon content. Special precautions must be taken during storage and transportation to prevent moisture.
Standard Blocks: Customized according to industry standards and customer requirements, these lumps offer relatively uniform dimensions and specifications, offering greater versatility and interchangeability, facilitating metering and dosing in various industrial processes.

(II) Ferro silicon alloy Powder

Gray in color with a metallic luster, ferro silicon powder is made from industrial silicon lumps through fine processing such as crushing and grinding. Its size can be adjusted according to specific applications to meet the fineness requirements of different industries.

Application Areas

(I) Steelmaking Industry

Deoxidizer:

In the final stage of steelmaking, deoxidation is essential to achieve high-quality steel with the correct chemical composition. Due to the strong chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen, FeSi is an extremely effective deoxidizer in the steelmaking process, suitable for both precipitation and diffusion deoxidation. Practice has shown that ferrosilicon not only meets the deoxidation requirements of steelmaking but also possesses desulfurization properties. Its high specific gravity and strong penetrating power enable it to more efficiently remove harmful impurities from molten steel, improving its purity.

Alloying Agent:

Adding an appropriate amount of silicon to steel can significantly enhance its strength, hardness, and elasticity. Ferro silicon alloy is widely used as an alloying agent in the smelting of various types of steel, including structural steel (0.40-1.75% silicon content), tool steel (0.30-1.8% silicon content), spring steel (0.40-2.8% silicon content), and transformer silicon steel (2.81-4.8% silicon content). Furthermore, ferrosilicon powder, due to its ability to release significant heat when burned at high temperatures, is often used as a heating agent in ingot caps, helping to improve ingot quality and recovery rates. In the steelmaking industry, approximately 3-5 kg of 75% ferrosilicon is consumed for every ton of steel produced.

(II) Cast Iron Industry

Adding a certain amount of ferrosilicon alloy to cast iron can prevent carbide formation and promote graphite precipitation and spheroidization. In particular, it is an essential inoculant (to aid graphite precipitation) and spheroidizing agent in the production of ductile iron. The addition of ferrosilicon improves the properties of cast iron, imparting superior casting properties and seismic resistance. It also allows the mechanical properties of ductile iron to approach or even approach those of steel.

(III) Ferroalloy Production

High-silicon ferro silicon (or siliceous alloy) is often used as a reducing agent in the ferro alloy industry to produce low-carbon ferroalloys due to its low carbon content and strong chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen.

(IV) Other Industries

Magnesium Metal Smelting:

In the Pidgeon process, 75# ferrosilicon is often used in the high-temperature smelting of magnesium metal to displace magnesium from CaO and MgO. Statistics show that approximately 1.2 tons of ferrosilicon are consumed to produce one ton of magnesium metal.

Mineral Processing Industry:

Ground or atomized fesi powder can be used as a suspension phase in the mineral processing industry.

Welding Rod Manufacturing:

Ferrosilicon powder can be used as a coating for welding rods, improving their performance.

Chemical Industry:

High-silicon ferrosilicon can be used to manufacture products such as silicone.
