The role of carborundum grains in steelmaking

 

1. Improve the hardness and wear resistance of steel

The hardness of carborundum grains is very high, about 3 times the hardness of steel. It can be used as the second phase in the steel compound to increase the carbide in the steel, thereby improving the hardness and wear resistance of the steel. In addition, carborundum grains can prevent oxidation, silicide and sulfidation reactions on the surface of the steel, thereby improving the corrosion resistance of the steel.

 

2. Reduce the brittleness of steel

As the carbon content in the steel increases, the hardness and brittleness of the steel will also increase. However, when carborundum grains is added to the steel, the brittleness of the steel will be reduced due to the optimization of the balance between hardness and toughness, thereby achieving the purpose of improving the toughness of the steel.

 

3. Improve the high temperature resistance of steel

Carborundum grains itself has good high temperature resistance, can maintain good stability and mechanical properties under high temperature conditions, and is not easy to rust. Therefore, during the high temperature treatment of steel, the addition of carborundum grains can maintain the stability of the steel and improve its wear resistance.
