For steelmakers, achieving low oxygen levels and clean molten steel is non-negotiable-yet traditional single-element deoxidizers (like ferrosilicon or aluminum) often fall short. Enter calcium silicon (CaSi), a composite deoxidizer that's revolutionizing how we purify steel, thanks to its unique blend of calcium (Ca) and silicon (Si). Here's why it's become a go-to for producing high-quality steel grades, from structural alloys to automotive sheet metal.
The magic of calcium silicon lies in its synergistic dual-action. Silicon first leads the charge, reacting rapidly with dissolved oxygen to remove 60-70% of O content-faster than many single additives. But calcium takes it further: with a stronger affinity for oxygen than silicon, it targets residual O (dropping levels to 15-25 ppm, vs. 30-40 ppm with ferrosilicon alone) and even transforms harmful oxides like SiO₂ into small, spherical inclusions. These rounded particles don't weaken steel like sharp, angular impurities, boosting toughness by 15-20% and weldability-critical for pipelines or car frames.

What makes it even more valuable is its flexibility across processes. In BOF/EAF furnaces, 5-30mm CaSi lumps added during tapping cut scrap rates by 2-3% by reducing porosity. For LF refining, cored wire CaSi (fed at 2-4 m/s) ensures precise dosing, lowering inclusion sizes from 5-10μm to 2-3μm. A mid-sized Chinese steel mill reported a 12% drop in production time after switching to CaSi, as it eliminates the need for multiple additives (e.g., ferrosilicon + aluminum).
Cost-wise, it's a winner too. At 8−12 per ton of steel,CaSi delivers more value than aluminum (which costs10-15/ton) while outperforming cheaper ferrosilicon. When selecting CaSi, prioritize grades with 28-32% Ca and ≤1.5% Al-this balance ensures optimal deoxidation without unwanted inclusions.
For steelmakers aiming to meet strict quality standards (like API 5L or automotive AHSS), calcium silicon isn't just an option-it's a game-changer. It turns "good" steel into "great" steel, with fewer defects and more consistent performance.
