What is the content of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking?

Electrolytic manganese, a key alloying additive in steelmaking, primarily enhances the strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance of steel through solid solution strengthening, desulfurization, and deoxidation. Its content needs to be precisely controlled (0.1%-1.5%) according to the steel type, directly affecting steel performance and production costs.

 Core components: Mn≥99.7% (electrolytic manganese flakes), impurities Fe≤0.08%, Si≤0.05%, S≤0.03%, P≤0.03%;
 Physical properties: Melting point 1244℃, density 7.43g/cm³, in flake (thickness 1-5mm) or powder form, highly chemically active, readily reacts with oxygen and sulfur, and rapidly integrates into molten steel at high temperatures;
 Core advantages: High purity, low impurities, precise strengthening effect, small addition amount (0.1%-1.5%) can significantly improve steel performance, making it a core additive for the production of mid-to-high-end steel;
 Form and packaging: Flakes (conventional), powder (suitable for spraying processes), packaged in moisture-proof iron drums (50kg/drum) or ton bags. International transportation requires sealed moisture protection.

Steel Type Mn Content Core Function
Carbon Steel 0.1%-0.3% Basic deoxidation and desulfurization improve toughness
Low Alloy High-Strength Steel 0.5%-1.0% Strength and hardness are enhanced, improving weldability
Alloy Structural Steel 0.8%-1.2% Strength and hardness are increased, improving hardenability and wear resistance
Stainless Steel 0.5%-1.0% Corrosion resistance and machinability are improved
Wear-Resistant Steel 1.0%-1.5% A hard phase is formed, enhancing wear resistance

The role of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking

The role of manganese metal flakes in steelmaking is mainly manifested in the following aspects:

1

Improve the hardness and strength of steel. When manufacturing high-hardness and high-strength steel, electrolytic manganese is one of the necessary additives.

2

Improve the corrosion resistance of steel.When manufacturing steel with strong corrosion resistance, the addition of electrolytic manganese can greatly improve the corrosion resistance of steel.

3

Prevent excessive oxidation of steel. During the steelmaking process, steel can combine with oxygen to produce oxides, and the addition of electrolytic manganese can effectively inhibit this unnecessary oxidation reaction, thereby ensuring the quality of the steel.
