What is Ferro Phosphorus?

Ferrophosphorus alloy (FeP) is a composite ferroalloy with iron and phosphorus as its core components. Leveraging the solid solution strengthening and grain refinement properties of phosphorus, it has become a key functional material in the steel, casting, and chemical industries. Its phosphorus content and impurity control directly determine the performance of the final product.

The core characteristics of ferrophosphorus alloys are determined by phosphorus content and impurity control:

 Composition range: Phosphorus (P) 15%-25% (core functional element), Iron (Fe) 65%-75%, Impurities Si≤3.0%, Mn≤2.5%, C≤1.0%, S≤0.5%;
 Core advantages: Low cost, significant strengthening effect; the cost of adding phosphorus is only 1/5-1/3 of that of nickel and chromium, suitable for large-scale production;
 Key risks: Excessive phosphorus content (P>0.06% in steel) can easily lead to cold brittleness, requiring strict control of the addition amount.

Physical properties

ferrophosphorus
Appearance
Generally in block form, with a metallic luster on the surface, and the color is mostly silver-gray or dark gray. The size and shape of its blocks can vary depending on the production process and specific use.
ferrophosphorus
Density
The density is relatively high, about 6.3 - 6.7g/cm³, which makes it have a certain sense of weight during use, and when mixed with other materials, it will have different distributions according to the density difference.
ferrophosphorus
Melting point
The melting point is relatively high, between 1100 - 1300℃, which enables it to remain solid in a high temperature environment, suitable for some industrial applications that require high temperature resistant materials, such as steelmaking.
ferrophosphorus
Hardness
The hardness is relatively high, with a Mohs hardness of about 4-5. This hardness makes it perform well in terms of wear resistance and can withstand a certain degree of friction and collision.

Products Applications

Steelmaking:

In the steelmaking process, ferro phosphorus is an important alloy additive. An appropriate amount of phosphorus can improve the strength and hardness of steel, especially in the production of some special alloy steels, such as high-strength wear-resistant steel and corrosion-resistant steel. At the same time, phosphorus can also improve the cutting performance of steel, making it easier to cut steel during mechanical processing. However, excessive phosphorus content will reduce the toughness of steel and easily produce cold brittleness, so the amount of ferrophosphorus added needs to be strictly controlled.

Casting industry:

In casting alloys, phosphorus iron can adjust the fluidity of the alloy. It can lower the melting point of the alloy, making it easier for the alloy to fill the mold cavity during the casting process, thereby improving the molding quality of the casting. And in some alloys such as cast bronze, ferrophosphorus is also an important additive, which can improve the organization and properties of the alloy and improve the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the casting.

Other metal material processing:

In some special metal material processing, iron phosphorus can be used to manufacture phosphorus-containing metal composite materials. This composite material can make comprehensive use of the properties of ferrophosphorus, such as high strength, high hardness and good wear resistance, and can be used to manufacture wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant parts. In addition, in the manufacture of magnetic materials, an appropriate amount of phosphorus can adjust the magnetic properties of the material and improve the magnetism and stability of the magnetic material.
