What industries commonly use Ferro Silicon 72?

In the vast field of industrial production, ferrosilicon 72 has become an indispensable and important material in many industries due to its unique performance advantages. FeSi72 is named because of its silicon content of about 72%. It also contains iron and a small amount of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and other elements. Its good deoxidation, alloying and inoculation properties make it play a key role in many industries.

Steelmaking Industry: Core Deoxidizing and Alloying Raw Material

72 ferrosilicon is a mainstream deoxidizer in the steelmaking industry, also serving an alloying function, and is suitable for the production of various steel grades:

Deoxidation Applications:

In converter and electric arc furnace steelmaking, it serves as a key raw material for pre-deoxidation or combined deoxidation, with an addition amount of 0.4%-0.7% of the molten steel mass. Silicon reacts rapidly with oxygen in the molten steel to form SiO₂, which floats to the surface and is removed with the slag, reducing the oxygen content of the molten steel from 80-100 ppm to 40-60 ppm, reducing oxide inclusions and improving steel purity.

Alloying Supplement:

It supplements low-alloy high-strength steel and structural steel with silicon, increasing the strength and hardness of the steel without significantly reducing toughness. For example, in the production of Q355 low-alloy steel, adding 72# ferrosilicon can increase the tensile strength of the steel by 10%-15%, meeting the mechanical requirements of engineering structural components.

Suitable Scenarios:

Suitable for small and medium-sized steel mills producing ordinary carbon steel, low-alloy steel, and boiler steel, balancing deoxidation effectiveness with cost-effectiveness.

Foundry Industry: Cast Iron Inoculation and Performance Optimization

In the production of ductile iron and gray cast iron, ferrosilicon 72% is a commonly used inoculant, achieving both deoxidation and microstructure optimization:

Inoculation Effect:

Added at 0.2%-0.5% of the molten iron mass, silicon promotes the graphitization process, increases the number of graphite nuclei, resulting in finer and more uniform graphite morphology, and preventing the formation of white cast iron.

Performance Improvement:

Can increase the impact toughness of gray cast iron by 20%-30% and the tensile strength of ductile iron by 10%-15%, suitable for automotive parts (such as brake discs and engine blocks), machine tool beds, pipe castings, and other products with high mechanical performance requirements.

Advantages:

Compared to high-silicon ferrosilicon (such as FeSi75), FeSi 72% is less expensive and has a moderate impurity content (such as carbon, phosphorus, and sulfur), making it suitable for casting applications with moderate purity requirements.

Ferroalloy Production: Reducing Agent and Composition Regulator

In the smelting of other ferroalloys (such as silicon-manganese alloys and silicon-chromium alloys), ferrosilicon #72 serves as a reducing agent and composition supplement:

Reduction:

Utilizing the strong reducing properties of silicon, it reduces oxides such as silicon dioxide in the ore, assisting in the formation of the target ferroalloy. For example, in the production of silicon-manganese alloys, ferrosilicon alloy 72 can lower the smelting temperature and improve reaction efficiency.

Composition Regulation:

It supplements the silicon content in the alloy, precisely controlling the product grade and ensuring that silicon-manganese and silicon-chromium alloys meet industry standards.

Other Specialized Application Industries

Welding Materials Industry:

As a raw material component of welding electrodes and fluxes, silicon can improve the deoxidation effect of welds, reduce welding defects (such as porosity and slag inclusions), and improve the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of welds, making it suitable for structural steel welding, pipeline welding, and other applications.

Non-ferrous metal smelting:

In the production of aluminum and magnesium alloys, adding a small amount of 72% ferrosilicon (≤0.3%) can refine the alloy grains, improve the strength and wear resistance of the material, and is suitable for the production of automotive aluminum alloy wheels and lightweight alloy components for aerospace applications.

Chemical industry:

Used in the production of silicides (such as silanes and silicones). The silicon in ferrosilicon reacts with other chemical raw materials to produce organosilicon products, which are widely used in sealants, lubricants, coatings, and other fields.

Application advantages and selection logic of 72# ferrosilicon

Core advantages:

Balanced silicon content, taking into account deoxidation, inoculation, and alloying functions; lower cost than high-silicon ferrosilicon, high cost-effectiveness; controllable impurity content, suitable for the needs of mid-to-high-end industrial products.

Selection principles:

For applications requiring extremely high deoxidation efficiency and alloy purity (such as bearing steel and precision castings), FeSi75 can be selected; for cost-sensitive applications with moderate performance requirements (such as ordinary steel and general castings), 72 ferrosilicon is the optimal choice; for applications such as non-ferrous metal smelting and chemical processing, the amount added and impurity control requirements need to be adjusted according to the specific process.
