The composition ratio varies according to different uses and production processes. Usually the silicon content is between 30% - 60%, the chromium content is between 30% - 70%, and the rest is mainly iron, and also contains a small amount of impurity elements such as C, S, P. For example, a common FeCrSi alloy composition may be about 40% silicon, 50% chromium, and 10% iron.

Physical and chemical properties

Physical properties

Generally in lump or granular form, with a silver-gray metallic luster on the surface. The density is relatively high, usually around 6.0 - 7.0g/cm³, and the melting point is relatively high, about 1400 - 1500℃. It has high hardness and good wear resistance.

Chemical properties

The chemical properties are relatively stable at room temperature, but chemical reactions will occur in high temperature, humid or strong acid and alkali environments. The chromium element in silicon-chromium alloy has strong oxidation resistance. When heated in air, chromium will form a dense chromium oxide (Cr2O3) protective film on the surface of the alloy, which can prevent further oxidation of the internal alloy. At the same time, silicon can also improve the corrosion resistance of the alloy.

Application fields


Deoxidation and alloying

As deoxidizers, Si and Cr in CrSi alloy can react with oxygen in molten steel, effectively reducing the oxygen content in steel and reducing defects such as pores and slag inclusions in steel. Moreover, it is also an important alloying agent. Chromium can improve the strength, hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of steel, and silicon can enhance the elastic limit and heat resistance of steel. It is an indispensable raw material in the production of special steels such as stainless steel, tool steel, and heat-resistant steel.

Inoculation and alloying

In the casting process, ferro-silicon-chromium alloy can be used as an inoculant and alloying agent. As an inoculant, it can refine the grains of castings and improve the mechanical properties of castings, such as strength, toughness and hardness. As an alloying agent, it can introduce chromium and silicon elements into castings to improve the wear resistance, heat resistance and corrosion resistance of castings, and is often used in the production of wear-resistant castings, heat-resistant castings, etc.

Alloy material production

Used to manufacture some special alloy materials, such as chromium alloys and silicon alloys. In the production process of these alloys, SiCr alloy as a raw material can accurately control the chromium and silicon content in the alloy, thereby obtaining an alloy with specific properties. For example, when producing certain chromium silicon alloy materials for the electronics industry, by controlling the amount of silicon-chromium alloy added and other process conditions, an alloy with good semiconductor properties can be obtained.

Reducing agent in metal thermal reduction method

In the smelting process of some metals, such as the production of titanium and zirconium by metal thermal reduction method, It can be used as a reducing agent. It can reduce the metal in the metal oxide and oxidize itself, thereby realizing the extraction of the metal.
