Global Supply Insights | Ferro Silicon Composition Differences & Industrial Applications

Chinese ferrosilicon (implementing GB/T 2272-2020 standard)

Silicon content: The silicon content of mainstream grade FeSi75 is 74-80%, and high-end products can reach more than 85% (such as FeSi85 for magnesium smelting).

Impurity control: The impurity content of aluminum (Al≤2.0%), carbon (C≤0.2%), phosphorus (P≤0.035%), sulfur (S≤0.02%), etc. is strictly benchmarked against the international standard ISO 5445. For example, the aluminum content of FeSi75Al1.0-A grade is controlled below 1.0%, meeting the high purity requirements of electric furnace steelmaking.

Certification system: Export products generally pass the inspection of international organizations such as SGS and BV, and the quality stability has been recognized by the Japanese, Korean and Southeast Asian markets for a long time.

Brazilian ferrosilicon (refer to ASTM A504 standard)

Silicon content: The silicon content of mainstream products is 75-80%, but due to differences in smelting processes, the actual silicon content fluctuates less.

Impurity characteristics: The aluminum content is generally less than 1.0% (some as low as 0.5%), and the calcium content is ≤0.75%, which is significantly better than Chinese and Russian products. For example, the aluminum content of Brazilian ferrosilicon 75% min is usually controlled at 0.5-1.0%, which is suitable for the production of alloy steels sensitive to aluminum.

Production process: Charcoal is used as a reducing agent, and the fluctuation of trace elements (such as titanium and calcium) is small, but the purity of silica is slightly lower than that of China, which may affect high-end applications.

Russian ferrosilicon (implementing GOST 1583-1993 standard)

Silicon content: The silicon content of ΦC75 grade is 74-80%, but the upper limit of aluminum content is 2.5%, which is significantly higher than the Chinese standard.

Impurity risk: Trace elements such as titanium (Ti) and calcium (Ca) fluctuate greatly, which may cause unstable performance of special steel grades. For example, the titanium content of some batches can reach 0.3%, affecting the quality of precision casting.

Export restrictions: Pre-shipment inspection (PSI) is required, but the Chinese GB standard is not recognized by Russia, increasing trade barriers.

China

Technology advantages: Fully enclosed electric furnace smelting is adopted, and the electricity cost accounts for more than 50%. Relying on the coal-electricity resources in Inner Mongolia, Ningxia and other places, a "coal-electricity-ferrosilicon" industry chain is formed, and energy consumption control leads the world (8400-9000 degrees of electricity consumption per ton of product).

Product form: It can provide 40-300 mesh powder, 0-5mm particles and lumps and other multi-specification products to meet different downstream processing needs.

Resource dependence: Depends on silica mines and local charcoal resources in Minas Gerais State, and charcoal accounts for more than 80% of the reducing agent, but the rainy season may cause supply fluctuations.

Export structure: Mainly supplies the North American market (such as the United States accounts for 50% of its exports), but the logistics cost is high, and the delivery cycle is usually 7-10 days longer than China.

Russia

Equipment aging: The average service life of electric furnace equipment in the Ural region exceeds 30 years, and the energy consumption is 10-15% higher than that in China. The high aluminum problem is difficult to cure.

Market positioning: Traditionally, it supplies the ordinary steel market in Southeast Asia (such as Vietnam and India), but logistics were blocked after the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and some orders were transferred to China.

Application fields and market feedback

China ferrosilicon

High-end market: It accounts for more than 40% of the global ferrosilicon exports, dominates the electric furnace steelmaking (such as JFE, Posco) and precision casting markets in Japan and South Korea, and is particularly suitable for the production of high-strength steel for automobiles and alloy steel for wind power.

Emerging demand: Benefiting from the recovery of the magnesium metal industry (output increased by 24.73% year-on-year in 2024), the demand for high-silicon and low-aluminum ferrosilicon in the field of magnesium smelting is growing rapidly.

Brazilian ferrosilicon

Sub-sectors: It has an advantage in the North American market (such as U.S. Steel), and its low aluminum characteristics (Al≤1.0%) are suitable for the production of electrical steel and high-end stainless steel. For example, the proportion of Brazilian ferrosilicon used in Tesla electric vehicle steel is as high as 30%.

Substitution risk: After 2022, the proportion of ferrosilicon imported by the United States from Brazil will drop from 40% to 25%, and part of it will be replaced by China's low-aluminum ferrosilicon (Al≤0.5%).

Russian ferrosilicon

Traditional advantages: It is still price competitive in cost-sensitive markets such as the Middle East and Africa, but its high aluminum characteristics have caused some customers to turn to China's low-aluminum ferrosilicon.

Quality disputes: Due to impurity problems, it has been reported as unqualified by the EU many times, and its international market recognition is low.

Procurement recommendations

High-end manufacturing: China's FeSi75 (Al≤1.0%) is preferred, and key indicators such as Al and Ti in the SGS test report need to be checked. It is recommended to use China's FeSi85 (Si≥85%) for magnesium smelting, and its low aluminum characteristics can increase the reduction efficiency by more than 15%.

Cost-sensitive demand: Russian ΦC75 can be considered, but the supplier needs to provide batch composition analysis to avoid excessive aluminum.

Special scenario: If North American customers need low aluminum ferrosilicon (Al≤0.5%), Brazilian products are a better choice, but please note that the delivery cycle is longer.
