Rare Earth Lanthanum Metal
Lanthanum is a chemical element with the symbol La and the atomic number 57. It belongs to the lanthanide series and is also one of the rare earth elements. Lanthanum is a silvery-white metal with good ductility, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity. It is soft and can be cut with a knife.
It has active chemical properties and is easily oxidized in the air. A layer of oxide film is formed on the surface, which makes it have a certain corrosion resistance; it can react with water to generate lanthanum hydroxide and hydrogen, but the reaction speed is slow; it can react with a variety of non-metallic elements, such as oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, etc. to form corresponding compounds; it can react violently with acid to generate corresponding salts and hydrogen.

Products Main uses
Metallurgical industry:
In steel production, adding a small amount of lanthanum can remove harmful impurities in steel, such as sulfur and phosphorus, improve the organizational structure of steel, and improve the strength, toughness, fatigue resistance and corrosion resistance of steel. Adding lanthanum to cast aluminum alloys can refine the grains and improve the hardness, strength and heat resistance of aluminum alloys.
Petrochemicals:
Lanthanum compounds can be used as active components of petroleum cracking catalysts to improve the activity, selectivity and stability of the catalysts, make petroleum cracking reactions more efficient, and increase the yield of light oil. In addition, it can also be used to prepare other chemical catalysts, such as catalysts for synthetic ammonia, organic synthesis and other reactions.
Glass and ceramics:
In glass manufacturing, lanthanum oxide can be used to make optical glass, high refractive index glass and radiation-resistant glass. Glass with lanthanum oxide added has a higher refractive index, lower dispersion and good chemical stability, and is often used to make advanced optical lenses, telescope lenses, etc. In the ceramic industry, lanthanum can improve the performance of ceramics, such as improving the hardness, strength, high temperature resistance and insulation of ceramics, and can also be used to prepare functional ceramics with special properties, such as piezoelectric ceramics, magnetic ceramics, etc.
Electronic industry:
Rare Earth Lanthanide elements have unique electronic structures and optical and magnetic properties, and are widely used in the electronics industry. For example, lanthanum metal can be used to manufacture electronic components such as capacitors, resistors, sensors, etc. It can also be used to prepare rare earth permanent magnetic materials, such as samarium cobalt permanent magnets, neodymium iron boron permanent magnets, etc. These permanent magnetic materials have the advantages of high remanence, high coercivity and high magnetic energy product, and are widely used in electronic equipment, electric vehicles, wind power generation and other fields.
Environmental protection:
Lanthanum compounds can be used to treat industrial wastewater and waste gas. For example, lanthanum hydroxide can be used as an adsorbent to remove pollutants such as heavy metal ions and phosphates in wastewater; lanthanum oxide can be used in automobile exhaust purification catalysts to reduce the emission of harmful gases such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons in exhaust gas.

There are many types of lanthanum compounds
Lanthanum oxide (La₂O₃):
It is one of the most common lanthanum compounds and is a white powder. It has a high melting point, high chemical stability and good optical properties, and is often used to manufacture optical glass, ceramic materials, catalysts, etc. In optical glass, it can increase the refractive index and chemical stability of glass; in the field of ceramics, it can improve the performance of ceramics.
Lanthanum hydroxide (La (OH)₃):
It is a white solid with a certain alkalinity. It can be used to prepare other lanthanum compounds and can also be used as an adsorbent to treat industrial wastewater to remove pollutants such as heavy metal ions and phosphates.
Lanthanum chloride (LaCl₃):
It is usually a colorless crystal and is easily soluble in water. It is an important rare earth halide and is often used in the separation and purification of rare earth elements. It can also be used as an active component or precursor of a catalyst in organic synthesis and petrochemicals.
Lanthanum nitrate (La (NO₃)₃):
It generally exists in the form of a hydrate, such as lanthanum nitrate hexahydrate (La (NO₃)₃・6H₂O), which is a white crystalline powder. Lanthanum nitrate is an important raw material for the preparation of other lanthanum compounds and is widely used in chemical analysis, catalyst preparation, and materials science.
Lanthanum sulfate (La₂(SO₄)₃):
It is a white powder, slightly soluble in water. Lanthanum sulfate plays a certain role in the preparation of some rare earth salts and the separation of rare earth elements. It can also be used in the preparation of certain catalysts and functional materials.
Lanthanum carbonate (La₂(CO₃)₃):
white precipitate, insoluble in water. Lanthanum carbonate can be used to prepare lanthanum oxide and other lanthanum compounds. In the medical field, lanthanum carbonate chewable tablets can be used to treat hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic kidney disease.
Lanthanum phosphate (LaPO₄):
has good stability and optical properties, and can be used to prepare fluorescent materials, laser materials, etc. In fluorescent materials, lanthanum phosphate can be used as a matrix material to achieve different luminescence properties by doping other rare earth ions.
Lanthanide metal organic compounds:
such as cyclopentadienyl lanthanum ((C₅H₅)₃La), etc., these compounds have unique roles in the field of organic synthesis and catalysis, and can be used as catalysts or reaction intermediates to participate in a variety of organic chemical reactions.
