Why Does Steelmaking Require Desulfurization And Dephosphorization? So What Type Of Ferroalloy Can Be Used For Desulfurization And Desulfurization?

The main reason why elements such as phosphorus and sulfur need to be removed during the steelmaking process is that these elements have a negative impact on the properties of steel. Removing them can improve the quality and performance of steel.

Importance of Phosphorus Removal

1,Affects the plasticity and toughness of steel:

High phosphorus content will increase the cold brittleness of steel, reduce its plasticity and toughness, and make it prone to cracks and fractures, especially in low temperature environments.

2,Affect processing performance:

Excessive phosphorus content will affect the processing properties of steel, such as surface cracking and deformation during cold working.

3,Affects welding performance:

Phosphorus will concentrate in the weld area during the welding process, forming brittle substances, reducing the strength and toughness of the welded joint, and affecting the stability and reliability of the overall structure.

Importance of Sulfur Removal

1,Affects the processing properties of steel:

High sulfur content will reduce the processability of steel, making it prone to thermal cracks and thermal fractures during processing, affecting process operability and formability.

2,Affects welding performance:

Sulfur also has a negative impact on welding performance, increasing the risk of pores and molten holes forming during the welding process, and reducing the quality of welded joints.

What type of ferro alloy is used to remove phosphorus and sulfur

In the steelmaking process, the commonly used ferroalloys used to remove phosphorus and sulfur are:

1

Calcium silicon alloy: Mainly used to remove phosphorus. By adding calcium silicon alloy, phosphorus can be reduced to calcium phosphide, which can be separated from the molten steel and form slag, thereby removing the phosphorus content.

2

Manganese silicon alloy: used to remove sulfur. Manganese silicon alloy can reduce the sulfur in molten steel to manganese sulfide, which also forms slag, to achieve the purpose of removing sulfur.

These ferroalloys are added to the furnace during the steelmaking process and fully mixed and react with the molten steel to achieve the purpose of removing harmful elements such as phosphorus and sulfur and improve the quality and performance of the final steel.
