Ferrosilicon 65 is an important ferroalloy product, primarily composed of silicon (Si) and iron (Fe). The "65" designation indicates the silicon content. Typically, the silicon content in FeSi 65 is ≥65%, with the remainder primarily iron, along with small amounts of impurities such as aluminum (Al), carbon (C), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S). It exhibits a silvery-gray metallic luster and typically appears in Lumps or granules. It is relatively hard and somewhat brittle.

Steelmaking Industry


Deoxidizer:

Ferrosilicon 65 is a very commonly used deoxidizer in steelmaking. During the steelmaking process, dissolved oxygen in the molten steel can severely impact its quality, leading to reduced strength, decreased toughness, and the formation of defects such as pores. Silicon has a strong affinity for oxygen. When fesi65 is added to molten steel, it rapidly reacts with oxygen to form silicon dioxide (SiO₂). The reaction equation is: 2FeO + Si → 2Fe + SiO₂. The resulting silicon dioxide has a low density and rises to the surface of the molten steel as slag, allowing for easy removal. This effectively reduces the oxygen content in the molten steel and improves the purity and quality of the steel. Statistics show that in the production of ordinary carbon steel, 3-5 kg ​​of 65#ferrosilicon is typically added per ton of steel as a deoxidizer.

Alloying Agent:

Ferrosilicon 65%, as an alloying agent, can significantly improve the properties of steel. Silicon dissolves in ferrite, producing a solid solution strengthening effect that increases the strength and hardness of steel. For example, in the production of low-alloy structural steel, the appropriate addition of ferrosilicon65 can increase the yield strength of the steel by 30-50 MPa. Silicon also enhances the steel's elastic limit. In spring steel production, silicon is typically added at a level of 1-2%, effectively improving the fatigue life and elastic properties of the spring steel. Furthermore, in electrical silicon steel, the addition of ferrosilicon 65% can adjust the silicon content to 3-5%, optimizing the steel's magnetic permeability and reducing hysteresis losses. It is widely used in the manufacturing of power equipment such as transformer cores.

 

Foundry Industry

 

Inoculant:

In the foundry industry, particularly in the production of gray and ductile iron, it is often used as an inoculant. Its primary function is to promote graphitization and improve the morphology and distribution of graphite in castings. When ferrosilicon65 is added to molten iron, its silicon provides nuclei for graphite nucleation, increasing the number of graphite nuclei and refining the graphite flakes or nodules, thereby improving the mechanical properties of the casting, such as toughness, strength, and wear resistance. Research has shown that using 65fesi as an inoculant can increase the tensile strength of gray cast iron by 10-20% and the elongation of ductile iron by 2-5%. Generally, the amount of 65% ferrosilicon added to each ton of molten iron is approximately 0.5-1 kg.

Spheroidizing Aid:

In ductile iron production, in addition to using spheroidizing agents (such as magnesium alloys) to spheroidize graphite, ferrosilicon65 alloy also plays an important auxiliary role. It can adjust the chemical composition of the molten iron, improve spheroidization, and reduce defects such as poor spheroidization. The silicon in 65 ferro silicon alloy helps stabilize the carbon equivalent in the molten iron, promotes the graphitization process, and further improves the quality and performance stability of ductile iron.

 

Other Applications

 

Welding Materials:

In the manufacturing of welding electrodes, ferrosilicon 65 powder can be used as a coating component. It stabilizes the arc, reduces weld porosity and slag inclusions, and improves weld quality, enhancing the strength and toughness of the weld joint. For example, adding an appropriate amount of fesi 65 powder to the flux coating of manual arc welding electrodes can optimize the silicon content of the weld metal and enhance the overall performance of the weld.

Non-ferrous Metal Smelting:

In certain non-ferrous metal smelting processes, such as the magnesium smelting industry, it is used as a reducing agent. Under high temperature and vacuum conditions, the silicon in 65#ferrosilicon reacts with magnesium oxide (MgO), reducing magnesium from the oxide. The chemical reaction equation is: 2MgO + Si → 2Mg + SiO₂. This process is a key step in the magnesium smelting process. By properly controlling the reaction conditions and the amount of ferrosilicon65, efficient magnesium extraction and production can be achieved.

Chemical Industry:
